چکیده

We compared neuronal activity in the dorsal and ventral premotor areas (PMd and PMv, respectively) when monkeys were preparing to perform arm-reaching movements in a motor-set period before their actual execution. They were required to select one of four possible movements (reaching to a target on the left or right, using either the left or right arm) in accordance with two sets of instruction cues, followed by a delay period, and a subsequent motor-set period. During the motor-set period, the monkeys were required to get ready for a movement-trigger signal to start the arm-reach promptly. We analyzed the activity of 211 PMd and 109 PMv neurons that showed selectivity for the combination of the two instruction cues during the motor-set period. A majority (53%) of PMd neurons exhibited activity significantly tuned to both target location and arm use, and an approximately equal number of PMd neurons showed selectivity to either forthcoming arm use or target location. In contrast, 60% of PMv neurons showed selectivity for target location only and not for arm use. These findings point to preference in the use of neuronal activity in the two areas: preparation for action in the PMd and preparation for target acquisition in the PMv.

Diabetes Mellitus Type1 and Neuronal Degeneration in Ventral and Dorsal Hippocampus

Background and Objectives: Studies have documented the morhplogical, neurochemical and functional difference between the dorsal and ventral zones of hippocampus. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of chronic diabetes mellitus type1 on ventral and dorsal zones of hippocampus. Methods: Experimental diabetes was induced by stereptozotocin at a dose of 60 mg/kg. At the end of 8 wee...

Neuronal Activity in the Dorsal Premotor Area and Ventral Premotor Area of Monkeys adapting to a New Dynamic Environment

In a series of experiments, we investigated how neurons in the different motor areas of the frontal lobe reflect the movement dynamics, and how their neuronal activity undergoes plastic changes when monkeys learn a new dynamics. Here we describe the results obtained in the dorsal premotor area (PMd) and ventral premotor area (PMv). Monkeys performed visually instructed, delayed reaching movemen...

Premotor cortex activation during observation and naming of familiar tools.

Positron emission tomography was used to investigate whether observation of real objects (tools of common use) activates premotor areas in the absence of any overt motor demand. Silent naming of the presented tools and silent naming of their use were also studied. Right-handed normal subjects were employed. Tool observation strongly activated the left dorsal premotor cortex. In contrast, silent...

Encoding of Both Reaching and Grasping Kinematics in Dorsal and Ventral Premotor Cortices.

Classically, it has been hypothesized that reach-to-grasp movements arise from two discrete parietofrontal cortical networks. As part of these networks, the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) has been implicated in the control of reaching movements of the arm, whereas the ventral premotor cortex (PMv) has been associated with the control of grasping movements of the hand. Recent studies have shown th...

JN-01034-2004.R3 p.1 FINAL ACCEPTED VERSION Activity Properties and Location of Neurons in the Motor Thalamus That Project to the Cortical Motor Areas in Monkeys

The activity of neurons in the motor nuclei of the thalamus that project to the cortical motor areas (the primary motor cortex, the ventral and dorsal premotor cortex, and the supplementary motor area) was investigated in monkeys that were performing a task in which wrist extension and flexion movements were instructed by visuospatial cues prior to the onset of movement. Movement was triggered ...
